Britney Spears: Rising From the Ashes
Hollywood's history is peppered with stories of the rise and fall of stars, and they often just end there. It is, therefore, a real breath of fresh air to hear a story of rising, falling, and rising once again. Such is the story of the phenomenon that is Britney Spears.
Britney Jean Spears was born on December 2, 1981 in Mississippi. She was, however, raised in Kentwood, Louisiana in a proper Southern Baptist home. Growing up, she was a very accomplished gymnast and sang in the local church choir. Even at such an early age, she already knew that she wanted to become a star. She first appeared on TV in Star Search and eventually joined The New Mickey Mouse Club. She briefly joined Innosense, an all-female pop group before debuting as a solo artist in 1998. And the rest, you could say, is history.
Although her career went from strength to strength, her personal life was nothing short of a downward plummet into disaster. In 1999, she started dating fellow Mouse-keeter, Justin Timberlake, and though it seemed like they would live happily ever after, the relationship was sadly short-lived due to alleged infidelity on Britney's part. Since then, she has been involved with Fred Durst and Colin Farrell. In 2004, Britney married childhood friend Jason Alexander in the spur of the moment. It lasted a mere 55 hours before it was annulled. A few months later, she married backup dancer Kevin Federline and gave birth to 2 boys – Sean and Jayden. She filed for divorce in November 2006.
It was around this time that Britney's behavior took a turn for the worse. Her parenting skills became a matter of public speculation when she started using drugs and partying excessively with then-best friend Paris Hilton. In a desperate attempt to keep her children, she checked herself into rehab, but left shortly thereafter.
It all came to a standstill when she shaved her head in a hair salon, attacked a paparazzi vehicle with an umbrella, and was involved in a hit-and-run accident while driving without a license. Full custody was eventually given to her ex-husband in October 2007.
Strangely enough, despite turmoils in the home front, her fifth album, Blackout, debuted at number 2. This success led to her disastrous performance at the 2007 MTV Video Music Awards. Dressed in nothing more than a silver hot-pants-and-bra ensemble, it was very obvious that the once-fit Britney gained a lot of weight and was very much looking worse for wear.
In January 2008, Britney was hospitalized after refusing to relinquish her kids after a visit. She was eventually committed to a psychiatric ward. After numerous court appearances and proof of her good behavior, Britney regained most of her visitation rights. And so it was that a full year after her almost-tragic MTV performance, it was a happier, healthier Britney who walked on stage to open the 2008 ceremonies. She walked off with three major awards for Best Pop Video, Best Female Video, and the Video of the Year award, all for Piece of Me.
In December 2008, her sixth album, Circus debuted at number 1 on the Billboard 200 charts with the single Womanizer debuting at number 3. Britney is set to go on her first tour after 5 years, the “Circus Starring Britney Spears” tour beginning in March. It recently made headlines that Madonna will be joining her for an explosive dance routine.
Also in March, Britney will be releasing her own line of hair extensions after realizing that she's become quite an expert on weaves during her brief head-shaving phase. It seems that the blonde actually prefers them now because they're so much easier to deal with than real hair.
Indeed, the world has seen, without a doubt, one of the most stunning comebacks in the history of showbiz. Who else can pull it off better than the Princess of Pop herself?
